Rigs is a lot of fun. I faced computer opponents who sometimes offered an exciting challenge, while others either completely crushed my team or fell to double-digit losses. The game falls short on the last point, however if you're looking for another entry for your VR collection, take a gamble on RIGS. I'm your friendly neighborhood critic. There are four general classes of rig, differentiated by size, speed, durability, and weaponry. Firstly, there’s already a giant multiplayer game in the same vein as this – Rocket League. Occasionally funny. You’ll unlock some stuff along the way, play the same modes on the same maps, and eventually get bored by the game’s repetitiveness. Each match starts with the same laborious screen where you and your teammates get loaded into your mech, and every single time after you finish a match, you're forced to watch a completely pointless dance animation from the MVP of the match. And the ability to use your head to move around and aim, while disconcerting at first, is what makes the entire VR experience come together. Copyright ©2020 Designtechnica Corporation. It's only 3v3, but the gameplay is fast paced and the arenas are small enough that you are never really wanting more players. Sony provided a copy of the game and the PSVR hardware for this review. Crucially, the added variable of other players promises to extend the life of Rigs far beyond many of its peers. The concept behind RIGS: Mechanized Combat League enticed me from the get-go, and to an extent, it still does. And it also makes figuring out exactly how weapons work more of a chore, since there is such a wide assortment of different armaments; after purchasing a new mech, you have to go into a separate training room to test it out. The game also narrows the player’s field of view slightly while turning by default as peripheral movement can, apparently, be a source of nausea for many players in VR. And, outside of sometimes seeing a delay between the start of a match and my teammates appearing, there's no noticeable lag or similar technical issues when playing online. RIGS: Mechanized Combat League is a competitive arena FPS game from Guerilla Cambridge. But the matches too frequently felt lopsided. But the number of camera and comfort options are what truly make racing across the game's maps and leaping through the air to score aerial takedowns feel so natural. GameSpot may get a commission from retail offers. You’ll take your pilot and team to victory or drag them to crushing defeat over the course of a season, unlocking new RIGS and sponsorship deals. Gameplay is fast, fun, and easy to understand, but with a high threshold for mastery. RIGS compete in three types of tournaments, all of which are wildly popular spectator sports. There's both a single-player and multiplayer campaign, and both are built around completing a set number of matches to complete a "season." Time. This diverse range of gameplay types, both on- and offline, tied together with an in-game economy and progression system, makes Rigs one of the most fully-realized games currently available on any VR platform, with most of the games out there still feeling largely like tech demos or proofs of concept. Disclaimer: Out of all the PSVR titles, RIGS is the only one that gave me significant motion sickness with extended play. But the pace of the matches are perfect--an endless, unpausing march of the game's clock that gets you in and out of the action in 10 minutes. The groundwork is here for an amazing first-person experience in VR. The game's upgrades are equally ill-conceived. However, RIGS: Mechanized Combat League’s multiplayer is pretty solid stuff, and obviously the main draw of the package. Gameplay is fast, fun, and easy to understand, but also has a high threshold for mastery. The overall rank you earn--designated by the number of new fans you acquire after each match--carries across both online and off. Well, maybe that was just me, because after a while tedium started to set in with the single player mode. Note I said “solid,” because once you strip away the VR gimmick, what you’ve ultimately got is a pretty vanilla arena shooter with a neat little mini-game tacked on. With VR discomfort so particular to every individual, and liable to change over time as they get acclimated, having a suite of comfort options is an excellent concession for which more developers should strive. The concept sounds complicated and weird, though the deathmatch-meets-basketball mashup is genuinely fun. On top of that, you don't get a preview of the cosmetic rewards you can earn--basically, you don't know what you're working towards (beyond "new visor" or "new suit") until you earn it. Will the next-gen consoles have their Wii Sports moment? Guerrilla Cambridge has created a slick and thorough package that feels more fully-realized than nearly any other PSVR game we’ve played so far. All of these modes reward you with currency for buying new Rigs and customization options for your pilot’s appearance and celebratory gesture. It truly gives that feeling of being in a sport league, and the graphics are spectacular. Yet the lack of content holds it back, the cost of entry for a game of its sort is too high, and there’s better multiplayer to be found on the PSVR at this point. Then on top of the perks, the weapon loadout for each mech is different and locked to that specific mech. But the smaller details that RIGS stumbles over make it hard to justify continuing after completing an initial season. But the PlayStation VR-exclusive RIGS Mechanized Combat League proves even that genre can work in the confines of a headset. Secondly, if I’m going to play a multiplayer shooter, why would I play RIGS? RIGS is a multiplayer arena shooter. Nauseating action and mushy combat really cause this contender to drop points. At its core, RIGS is a first-person shooter where you pilot a robotic mech through sprawling, multi-tiered arenas across three primary modes: Team … But the rewards are only for your pilot, not your mech. There are three types of play: “Team Takedown” is a straightforward deathmatch-style game, with teams competing to score points by taking out their opponents. The graphics are bright, well-designed, and inviting. Virtual reality has the potential to make some game types better: storytelling can be more immersive, the jump scares of horror can be more frightening. However, actually getting into a match can be an insurmountable chore; I haven't been able to start a full 3v3 match on any mode except Team Takedown since the game's launch. When you turn and look around, the field of view around you, but without diminishing your peripheral view too drastically. Furthermore, EVE: Valkyrie exists, and frankly, that’s a better VR multiplayer title based on the simple virtue that it’s incomparable to anything else on the PS4 at the moment. From the home menu, you can select "sponsorships" that task you with things like "complete five melee takedowns" or "earn MVP twice" and reward you with cosmetic upgrades like visors, uniforms, and helmets. There’s something about the sensation of being in the cockpit of a giant mech that just feels right – the ability to live out all of my silly anime fanboy fantasies is finally within reach. Supporting its fun, core gameplay, the overall presentation is also top-notch. While I’m not a big fan of that title, there’s no denying that it’s basically cornered the market on “silly future sports played in unconventional ways,” and honestly does so in a more interesting way. Still, aside from not being able to access some tighter areas as a larger robot, most of it feels very same-y. RIGS Mechanized Combat League - Dev Diary- Making a VR Sport I PS VR From the moment you start Rigs, it immediately feels like one of the … RIGS: Mechanized Combat League Brings Arena Shooters to VR at E3 2016 Guerrilla's Piers Jackson and Tom Jones stop by the GameSpot E3 2016 stage to talk RIGS: Mechanized Combat League … While aiming your weapons is always accomplished by turning your head and looking — a strict improvement over using a thumbstick — but players have the option to turn the robot also with their head, or to have it more conventionally controlled by the right stick. In turn each class has specific, unlockable variants that come with different weapon loadouts and special abilities. Sponsorship deals with fictional companies act as a sort of achievement system, wherein you can have one online and one offline sponsorship at any given moment, giving you rewards for completing particular challenges, such as hitting a certain number of takedowns or assists in a given match. RIGS controls are top-notch, and aside from the grating, repetitive announcers, the arenas are colorful places that I love competing in. There are also solo skill challenges. In RIGS: Mechanized Combat League, players take on the role of a RIG pilot, which in the far-flung future is the equivalent of a sports superstar. The arenas, set in cities around the world, are laced with ramps, tunnels, and platforms that allow for strategic variety and different ways for teams to control space, both horizontal and vertical.
